Owl Cupcakes

Are you smarter than a fifth grader?
Do you have a fifth grader?

Go ahead and laugh all you want at those ignorant contestants on the show.
Then try studying with a fifth grader.

Still feeling smart?
  1. What was the date of the Emancipation Proclamation?
  2. Which Civil War battle marked the furthest north that the Confederacy advanced into Union Territory?
  3. What was the Anaconda Plan?
  4. Where was the Battle of Antietam?
  5. What did Confederate soldiers eat?
  6. Who was  Matthew Brady?

(Answers below)

In honor of my fifth grader's birthday, I thought these cute Wise Owl Cupcakes would be perfect to bring in during lunch!  I found this smart idea in one of my favorite cupcake books, Hello, Cupcake! by Karen Tack and Allen Richardson.  You can find the book HERE!

Start with a chocolate cupcake baked in a brown wrapper.

Top with chocolate frosting.

With a serrated knife, cut the chocolate part of an Oreo in thirds.

For the owl ears, place round sides facing toward the center like this.

Use the frosted side of the Oreos for two big eyes!

Pipe chocolate icing on the ears and then add "Feathers" above the eyes.

Add two Junior Mint eyes and a Runt Banana nose.

Are you feeling smarter?

Here's the answers:

  1. January 1, 1863
  2. The Battle of Gettysburg
  3. The Union strategy for defeating The Confederacy during the Civil War
  4. A Civil War battle fought in 1862 near Sharpsburg, Maryland
  5. Biscuits and bacon
  6. A Civil war photographer
If you answered these correctly, congratulations!  You are as smart as a fifth grader!

These are adorable! And despite teaching 5th grade, once upon a time, I have sadly forgotten a fair number of dates since not using them much as a food writer. ;o)

Thanks for linking up to Friday Food on Momtrends.com last week!
Um, I'm not smarter than a 5th grader. Not at all! I don't know if I ever knew those answers! These cupcakes are so cute. Love them! Thanks for sharing on Crazy Sweet Tuesday!
