Slow Cooker Applesauce

I went with the first graders to the apple orchard last week and we got to pick our own apples!
Of course, I bought some apples, too.  And some Apple Hand Pies.  And some Apple Doughnuts.
Apples are good for you, you know.

Since I was so excited about the arrival of fall and all the autumnal delights that go with it, I decided to make some applesauce. My slow cooker is perhaps my favorite kitchen appliance.  My husband got me this stainless steel beauty for Christmas one year.  I still love him for it. I love how you can make dinner in the morning and feel good about it all day. It's a multi-tasker's dream.

For the applesauce, peel and cube 3 pounds of apples (about 8).  Use firm, slightly tart apples.
I used a combination of Granny Smith and Rome Beauty.

Add the cinnamon, brown sugar and lemon and stir.

Cook for four hours on high.
Mash the apples with a fork or spoon, leaving a few chunks.

The best part is that it fills your house all day with the delicious aroma of apple pie!

Slow Cooker Applesauce

3 pound apples, peeled and cubed
1/2 cup brown sugar or 1/4 cup agave nectar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
juice of 1/2 lemon

Combine ingredients in a slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6 - 8 hours.
When the apples are tender, mash with a spoon or fork.

Yummy. Sounds so good. I can almost smell it now. Will def. try this.
Sounds good! I bought some apples this weekend to make slow cooker applesauce this week. Thanks for the recipe!
i was just thinking about applesauce today. (randomly. lol.) if i go apple picking, i'll definitely try this recipe. a few weeks ago, i made potato latkes and wanted some applesauce, so i cut up a few slices and cooked them in the microwave! it worked pretty well in a pinch. smelling them in a slow cooker would be 10x better.
I made my own crockpot applesauce last weekend, and added pureed pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice. It turned out really good. Don't you love the smell of your house with applesauce cooking?

LOVE that this can be made in a slow-cooker. What an easy and fairly healthy way to make use of all those inexpensive seasonal apples!

This is great! Do you happen to know how long this will keep in the fridge?
I made a batch in the slow cooker last weekend. I didn't cook long enough and I didn't add lemon. I will try again! So glad I stopped by Tidy Mom's link and found you. And if you get a chance, please swing by my linky (Friday Food) and share this recipe.

I have already made one batch of applesauce and it was absolutely yummy. Second batch in crock pot as I type. Thanks for the recipe. I have a crock pot recipe for Apple Butter if anyone is interested.
Hi Shirley, I'd love a good apple butter recipe! Comment here with your blog link and I'll check it out!

So if you LOVE your slow cooker you should try a pressure cooker. They are fantastic. Cuisinart makes an electric one.(I bought mine at Costco.) I use all of my slow cooker recipes in my pressure cooker. The only thing difference is that instead on the apples taking 4 hours they only took 20 minutes. Oh and it retains more of the vitamins from fruits and vegetables when cooked in a pressure cooker. Just thought I would pass this along. Thanks for the recipe.
Great tip! I remember my mom using one growing up. Did not know that about the fruits and veggies! :-)

Can the jars of applesauce be frozen and kept for later? I have tons of apples and can't wait to make this applesauce!
I haven't tried it, but I am sure it can be. Just allow enough room for expansion if using a glass jar! I hope you enjoy it! :-)
